A New Hanover County woman that police said caused a head on collision on the Brogden Road Bridge over Interstate 95 in Smithfield Saturday night has been charged with driving while impaired and driving left of center.
Smithfield Police said Lawanda Marsh Booker, 29, of Wilmington was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of Brogden Road while crossing over I-95. Her 2002 Hyundai collided head on with a 2006 Chevy truck driven by Doris Smith Bister, 64, of Smithfield.
Police said Bister saw the vehicle approaching in her lane and was able to come to a complete stop before being hit. Police estimated Booker was traveling at 15 mph in her Hyundai at the time the vehicles struck head on.
Booker was transported to Johnston Medical Center for treatment. A passenger in her car, Billy Porter, 50, of Wilmington was not hurt. Bister also escaped without injury.
