Employees at an auto salvage business helped authorities catch a suspected thief.
On May 11th, someone used a forklift to steal 50 batteries and 4 catalytic converters from Green’s Auto Salvage on Highway 222 in Wayne County. The suspect and the vehicle were caught on cameras installed by the business owner.
On May 16th, employees of Green’s Auto Salvage waited inside the fenced in lot for the suspect to return. Around 4:00am, the same vehicle and suspect arrived. When one of the employees heard a forklift start up they confronted the suspect as a second employee dialed 911. The suspect fled before deputies arrived.
Around 2:10am Monday, employees were waiting as the suspect returned. Deputies were notified as they set up a perimeter. When the vehicle tried to flee it was stopped by the officers.
Inside the car, multiple vehicle parts and batteries were recovered. The items, valued at $1,435, were recovered and returned to the business owner.
Michael Eugene Barnes, Jr., 39, of Stantonsburg was charged with several offenses including felony larceny, possession of stolen goods and trespassing.
