An active duty airman at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro has been arrested for allegedly severely abusing his daughter who is just shy of being one month old.
Last Thursday, the infant was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital then transferred to a pediatric intensive care unit at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for trouble breathing. Medical personnel determined the baby had extensive internal injuries attributed to child abuse.
The baby, named Reagan, sustained broken ribs, a broken leg, and injuries to her head and brain.
As a result of an investigation, the child’s father, 29 year-old Eric Schmidt of Goldsboro was arrested this afternoon (Wednesday) and charged with non-sexual felony child abuse with serious bodily injury.
Authorities said the child resides with her parents in Goldsboro. A joint investigation is ongoing between Goldsboro Police and the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
Mr. Schmidt is being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $750,000 bond.
