A gas leak forced the evacuation of several homes Thursday evening in South Smithfield.
A gas line was severed by an excavator in the 1500 block of South Brightleaf Boulevard. As a precaution, residents along Finney Drive were forced out of their homes until gas company representatives could arrive on the scene and cap the leak.
The Smithfield and Four Oaks Fire Departments responded to the scene and sprayed water on the gas leak until it was stopped. No injuries were reported.
