High School Senior Receives Heart Of A Champion Award

Corinth Holders High senior Samara Gibson is one of 19 student-athletes from North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) member schools to be honored for her outstanding sportsmanship as a winner of the “Heart of a Champion” recognition.

Nominees must have participated in at least one varsity sport or activity, including cheerleading, during the 2016-17 school year, have not been ejected from any contest, and must have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and sportsmanship during their high school careers.

Gibson was nominated by Corinth Holders High teacher, Peter Clark. Clark described Gibson as someone who is a champion on and off the field, an excellent teammate and someone who makes her school and community better.

Gibson and 18 recipients from across the state were honored at a reception on April 8 at the Doubletree by Hilton-RDU, sponsored by NC Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company.

Gibson is the CHHS Senior Class President and was also the recipient of the Tom Suitor Extra Effort Award. She is a four-year conference champion sprinter on the CHHS Pirate Track team and holds records in the 55 meter, 100 meter, 200 meter, 300 meter, 400 meter, and 500 meter sprints.

In addition to those achievements, Gibson is also a coach for her sister, Tierra, who is in the life skills class and on the track team at CHHS. Gibson will coach and cheer on her sister at the Special Olympics at Smithfield-Selma High on April 21.
