Thieves Steal Copper From Power Pole, Cell Tower

Thieves will go to any length or height to steal.

On Monday, Duke Energy crews discovered where someone had climbed a power pole in the 4300 block of Highway 242 South of Benson and removed 695 feet of copper ground wiring. 

The wiring was worth about $600.

Power company officials believe the theft occurred sometime between Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area during the time of the theft is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5000.

In an unrelated incident, about $600 worth of ground wiring was discovered stolen on Monday from a Verizon cell phone tower located on Jack Road near Clayton. The suspect also caused about $300 in damage to a fence around the tower.
