Town Launches Search For New Manager

The Town of Selma has formally started the search for a new town manager.

This week, the mayor and town board met and agreed to work with Wilder Consulting who will assist in the selection process.

The current manager, Jon Barlow, was hired in January 2014. He narrowly survived a 3-to-2 vote to be fired in January 2015.  In late-2016 Barlow announced plans to retire by December 31, 2017.

On Tuesday, town leaders approved a job advertisement that will be published.
Even with his pending retirement, Barlow was recently given a 1.5 percent pay increase which took effect March 1st. His salary increased from $92,920 to $94,313.80.

Prior to Mr. Barlow, Richard Douglas served as the Selma Town Manager from 2008 to 2013.

TOWN MANAGER-SELMA, NC, population 6200, is seeking qualified candidates for the Town Manager position. A growing, diverse community located in Johnston County, Selma is a full- service Town, and has a Council-Manager form of government consisting of a mayor and four non-partisan council members. The Town has a $19.5 millionbudget, 9 departments, and 75 full- time, and 47 part-time employees.The Town Manager is responsible for recommending policies and programs to the Town Council and implementing its decisions, and the general direction of the Town’s operations. A Bachelor’s Degree in PublicAdministration, Business Administration, or related field is required; an MPA or MBA is preferred. The position also requires five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in local government management, preferably including experience in finance and planning, with an emphasis on economic development and revitalization. The preferred candidate will be a strategic-thinking individual and visionary with strong management/supervisory skills, good verbal and written communications skills, and a commitment to proactively marketing and growing Selma. The candidate will possess the ability to relate to elected officials, Town staff, citizens, and the business community. The starting salary is dependent upon qualifications.
