Woman Shot By Officers On I-40 Dies

A woman who reportedly exchanged gunfire with a state trooper and Johnston County deputy Saturday morning on Interstate 40 died Tuesday afternoon at Wake Medical Center.

The NC SBI said Tina Renee Medlin, 50, of Raleigh died from her injuries about 4:00pm.

Around 6:30am last Saturday, a single vehicle accident was reported on I-40 near the 337 mile marker, not far from the Sampson County line.  Before emergency crews arrived on the scene, witnesses to the accident stopped. They reported a woman in the vehicle was armed with a gun and stated she wanted to die.

Trooper J.L. Taylor and Deputy Taylor Davis arrived on the scene. Medlin reportedly fired at the officers who returned fire and wounded Medlin.  Both officers are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an SBI investigation.

Medlin has a criminal history dating back to 1990 including an arrest in 2013 in Wake County for assault on a government official and resisting a public officer.

The SBI is asking for anyone who saw or had contact with Medlin after 8:00pm on Friday, July 7th and before the 6:30am crash Saturday, July 8th to contact the Bureau at 1-800-334-3000.  Photos by John Payne
