12 Year-Old Fatally Shoots Intruder During Home Invasion

Goldsboro Police are investigating a robbery and shooting death. Officers responded to an apartment in the 400 block of S. William Street at 12:43am Friday.

Police discovered a resident of the apartment, 73 year-old Linda Ellis, suffering from a gunshot wound. A short time later, police were called to the intersection of William and Elm Streets for a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The wounded man, 19 year-old Khalil Herring of Goldsboro, was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. Ellis was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and at last report was in stable condition.

Investigators say it appears two masked people forced their way into Ellis’ home and shot her. During the robbery, a 12 year-old juvenile in the apartment retrieved a firearm and in self-defense shot at the suspects, causing them to flee.

Preliminary evidence suggests Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders.

Charges are not anticipated by the Goldsboro Police Department against the juvenile who fired the gun.

The investigation into the armed robbery and shooting is on-going.
