18 Year-Old Indicted For Murder Of Johnston County Store Clerk

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A Grand Jury has indicted an 18 year-old man on murder, kidnapping, and robbery charges. Alexander Leon Herrera of Thunder Ridge Drive, Garner was indicted this month by a Grand Jury in Smithfield for the murder of William Hayden Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, age 19, was working November 25, 2022 around 5:00pm at Murphy’s Express at 4993 NC Highway 42 West near Interstate 40 in the Cleveland community. Herrera reportedly entered the business and stabbed Fitpatrick multiple times. The victim died inside the store.

Herrera fled on foot, however, a Johnston County Sheriff’s Office K-9 located him a short distance away lying on the ground.

A Grand Jury indicted Herrera on three charges: murder, first-degree kidnapping, and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Herrera remains in the Johnston County Jail without bond. A trial date has not been set.
