3 Caught Breaking Into Abandoned Nursing Home

Three people are facing felony charges after they were reportedly caught stealing items from an abandoned nursing home in Smithfield.

Smithfield Police received a call at 12:17pm Wednesday reporting three people were removing metal from the abandoned facility on Buffalo Road at Hospital Road.

Police arrived and found all three suspects still on the scene.  They had allegedly removed approximately $500 worth of copper and metal items.

Alphonso Jay Brockington, 41, of Buffalo Road, Smithfield; Demorris Marquil Lee, 19, of Strickland Drive, Smithfield; and Leighton Thomas Spurling, 19, of Hensley Place, Smithfield were each charged with one felony count of breaking and entering and one felony count of larceny.

Brockington was jailed under a $40,000 bond. Lee and Spurling were held under a $10,000 bond each.

The stolen metal was recovered by police.   The former nursing home building is reportedly in the process of being gutted.

Just because a building is empty does not mean you can help yourself. Same with job sites. Maybe we need a law class in the high schools so these buttheads can learn what is and what is not theirs to take.
