Four people were arrested early Tuesday morning following a brazen crime spree in Johnston County on Monday.
It began around 5:00am Monday when two of the suspects approached a 35 year-old Cleveland woman at her car in the parking lot of the Speedway on Highway 42 at I-40. The men requested the woman give them a ride. The victim said she felt comfortable giving the two strangers a ride even though they were wearing bandanas over their faces. She asked them to remove the bandanas and they complied. However, less than a minute later, they ordered the victim to pull over and exit the car. They then fled with her Toyota car which contained her purse, bank cards and wallet.
Around 1:00pm, a 73 year-old woman was traveling on Sanders Road near McGee’s Crossroads when a car in front of her suddenly blocked the roadway. Two men jumped out, ran back to her vehicle and reached into her car and tried to unlock the door. The victim realized the men were trying to steal her car so she put her vehicle in reverse and sped away from the area.
At 8:20pm, an 18 year-old Cleveland resident reported he was the victim of a robbery near the Cookout on Highway 42 at I-40. The victim sustained minor injuries during the robbery.
A short time later, deputies were called to a small fire alongside Blue Pond Road near Government Road. Officers found personal property belonging to the first victim in the fire along with the license plate off her stolen Toyota.
While on Government Road overnight, an officer on patrol spotted the stolen Toyota but the suspects failed to pull over. Four suspects jumped from the vehicle and fled. Following a brief manhunt involving a law enforcement K-9 all the men were arrested.
