The Town of Selma Parks and Recreation Department has released the schedule for the 2018 Selma Railroad Days Festival. Held on Friday, October 5th and Saturday, October 6th this year, the festival is always the first weekend in October. The Railroad Days Festival kicks off Friday night with the Chew Chew Food Truck Rodeo – 5 savory trucks and a dessert truck will be on-hand in addition to live entertainment by the Bad Decisions Band.
There are two fantastic new events happening this year at Railroad Days. First is the Mascot Race, which will take place Saturday at 10:00am in front of Town Hall on Raiford Street. Cheer your favorite mascot from schools, businesses, and local sports teams in this silly 100-yard race for bragging rights.
Another new event is the Railroad Spike Driving – Railroad Tie Flipping – Railroad Tie “Worm” competitions. The competition kicks off Saturday at 2:30pm near the main stage on Railroad Street. It will feature 4-man teams that will drive railroad spikes, flip railroad ties, and more to compete for both individual trophies and a team trophy to keep at their sponsoring gym for one year. This event is sure to be a huge hit with the crowd, so come early for best viewing.
As in past years, the festival starts with The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne/Johnston Counties Selma Railroad Run starting at 8:30am. Proceeds will benefit the clubs in Johnston County. This 5K road course is flat and fast! It is a USATF certified course and the event is sanctioned by the USATF so it’s a great road race to run your personal best! The Railroad Days Parade will start at 10:30am and features animated animals, bands, and the newly crowned Railroad Days Pageant Queens. There will also be live entertainment on 3 different stages throughout the day. The festival midway will feature food vendors, helicopter rides, a truck and car show, and a $5 unlimited kids’ zone will thrill children with 5 different inflatables.
The every-popular model train display returns to Historic Union Station. It will be set up from 9:00am starting Thursday, October 4th and will be available to view until 5:00pm Saturday, October 6th. The festival ends with a live show at the Rudy Theatre at 6:00pm.
