Search Warrant Issued For Benson Home Where Suspect Lived
A 49 year-old man has been arrested by Smithfield Police on charges he sexually exploited and took indecent liberties with a minor.
Police launched their investigation into the suspect, Michael Todd Carter of Creekstone Drive, Benson after he allegedly posted nude photographs of a 12 year-old girl on social media. A person recognized the child in the photo and alerted her family.
Carter was arrested on June 4th. Two days later – on June 6th – a search warrant was issued for his parent’s home on Creekstone Drive where he lived. Police seized multiple electronic devices from the suspect’s bedroom and vehicle including computers, cell phones, CD’s, SD cards, and numerous gift cards.
According to the search warrant, Carter met the victim when he lived in the Clayton city limits. The victim later moved to Smithfield. Over the past year, the victim said Carter had been sending friend requests to her social media account. She blocked his request but Carter later created a new account and continued to send her requests, even using a fake profile that appeared to be from a classmate.
The victim said Carter repeatedly asked for nude photos and eventually she emailed the photos to him. According to the search warrant, Carter responded with emojis, heart emojis, and cat emojis with heart eyes, even sending a message saying “you look good.”
The search warrant alleges Carter sent the naked photographs to a female friend he wanted to have a relationship. The friend told police Carter was in love with her and infatuated with the 12 year-old.
Police interviewed Michael Todd Carter on June 4th. He allegedly told detectives there were more nude photos of the victim on electronic devices including cell phones stored in his bedroom.
The items seized from Carter during the June 6th search warrant have been sent to the NC SBI Crime Lab for forensic analysis.
At last report, Carter was still being held in the Johnston County Jail on a $200,000 secured bond.
