81 Year-Old Driver Dies In Traffic Collision

SMITHFIELD – An elderly driver died Sunday from injuries sustained in a two vehicle accident in the Smithfield city limits. The accident was reported at 11:45am on E. Market Street (US 70) near Outlet Center Drive.

Police said Jerry Randle Grice, 81, of Smithfield was operating a 2005 Cadillac and attempting to pull from the driveway of the Waffle House and make a left turn onto Market Street. Grice pulled into the path of a 2012 Honda traveling westbound on E. Market Street and driven by Gracelyn Nicole McCoy, 21, of Kenly.

Grice was unrestrained and died from multiple blunt force injuries. McCoy was not injured.

Smithfield Police estimated Grice was traveling at 10mph and McCoy 30mph when the vehicles collided. The posted speed limit is 35mph.

Police shutdown E. Market Street for more than an hour while the fatal wreck was investigated. No charges were filed by investigating officer J.B. Sittig.
