Suspect Was On Bail Awaiting Trial For Possessing 11 Pounds Of Marijuana
A Goldsboro man is behind bars after officers found him picking up a delivery of almost 90 pounds of marijuana at a Johnston County home.
Austin Arthur Thomas, 38, was arrested on September 4th at a house in the 700 block of Champion Street in Clayton. He was charged by Clayton Police with trafficking marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for that trafficking. Officers said they found 89.13 lbs. of marijuana and a large undisclosed amount of cash.
Because there is a playground nearby, Thomas was also charged with possessing of a controlled substance within 1,000 of a park.
This is one of the largest drug busts in the history of the Clayton Police Department. The investigation and arrest were made possible thanks to the cooperation of state and neighboring law enforcement agencies.
Thomas’s bond was set at $500,000. This was not his first major drug bust in Johnston County.
On August 4th, a Johnston County deputy was running radar on Highway 42 East of Clayton near Thanksgiving Fire Department Road when he clocked a 2019 Audi driven by Austin Thomas traveling at 70 miles per hour in a 55 MPH zone. The officer stopped the Audi and detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. During a search, 11 pounds of marijuana and an undisclosed amount of cash was located and seized. Deputies also impounded the vehicle.
Austin is awaiting trial on charges from that incident including trafficking marijuana, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
