BUNNLEVEL — A man was shot while riding in a vehicle after leaving the scene of a large party Sunday morning, court records show.

Daniel Josiah Evans, 24, of Angier was shot in the 900 block of Sanderfer Road and later died at Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington.

According to reports, Harnett County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a shooting at a “liquor house” around 1:18 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they were met by uncooperative individuals exiting the “liquor house” who would only say they heard shots, detectives noted in an affidavit, applying for a search warrant.

At the scene, investigators say they found multiple shell casings strewn between 970 and 972 Sanderfer Road.

The “liquor house” was reportedly located at 970 Sanderfer Road.

In the affidavit, detectives say the incident likely started inside the “liquor house” since a large crowd had gathered and people were known to frequent the place “to partake in alcoholic beverages.”

A witness told detectives she heard Evans say, “We got to go. They said anyone from Angier got 10 seconds to get the (expletive deleted) outta here.”

“Lots of people” aggressively followed Evans and two women as they left the party, according to the affidavit. And one in the crowd was reaching for his waistband, the witness reportedly told detectives.

Evans and two women hopped in a 2018 silver Ford Eco SE to drive away, according to the affidavit. The car carrying Evans reportedly drove straight before turning back around.

Then, shots rang out.

Detectives noted in the affidavit that another witness was standing in front of the “liquor house” when he said he heard shooting and saw people congregate between 972 and 970 Sanderfer Road.

A woman in the car, carrying Evans, told detectives the back glass was busted out and a tire was flat as they turned onto U.S. Highway 401 where she heard Evans say, “I think I got hit.”

Evans was struggling to breathe and keep his eyes open, according to witness statements in the affidavit. The women drove Evans to Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington and dropped him off.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In warrants, detectives recorded finding spent, red shotgun shell casings and a copper projectile inside the vehicle that took Evans to the hospital.

A witness told officers multiple people were shooting from the roadway and from a nearby woodline.

No arrests have been made in the case and deputies said they do not believe the shooting was a random act as Evans was known to people at the party.
