A Benson man is in custody in Harnett County after what deputies suspect to be a “drug-related” shooting on Ashe Avenue near Dunn Monday morning.

Around 9:30 a.m. deputies and investigators responded to the call of a shooting at 3039 Ashe Avenue. When they arrived they found the victim, 59-year-old Ricky McMillan of Dunn, with a gunshot wound to his lower leg, according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect 20-year-old Jonas Elijah Warren, was arrested in Clayton about an hour and a half later. Deputies say he fled the scene after shooting McMillan. Deputies notified nearby law enforcement agencies to be on the look out for the man, according to a Benson Police Department spokesperson.

Officers from the Benson Police Department initially searched for Warren at the Days Inn of Benson, but were unable to find him, according to the spokesperson.

Johnston County deputies captured him a short time later in the parking lot of the Walmart in Clayton, according to the HCSO.

Warren is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and shooting into an occupied motor vehicle.

McMillan was taken to Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn where he was reported to be in stable condition.

The investigation is continuing, according to the HCSO.
