BENSON – The Benson Police Department is looking for the gunman accused of shooting into homes and cars while standing in an apartment parking lot on Dec. 18.

Police say the shooter is responsible for an estimated $30,500 in damages to cars and apartments on Blackmon and Barefoot streets.

A total of five vehicles and four apartments were struck with bullets or bullet fragments around 7:30 p.m., according to a Benson PD incident report.

The initial report came from Blackmon Street where one resident described the shooter as a black male wearing a black mask. The witness said the shooter walked into the parking lot of the apartment complex and started shooting toward the building before leaving on foot in an unknown direction.

While police were investigating and securing the scene, witnesses reported hearing gunshots from the backside of the apartments and near an adjacent apartment complex on Barefoot Street.

When police arrived, they discovered two more vehicles with gunshot damage. The two vehicles belonged to residents at the Barefoot Street apartments.

Later in the evening, officers received reports of bullets having entered the interior of multiple apartments, including a shot fired through the window of a child’s bedroom. The bullet was recovered from one of the walls.

A witness identified a person of interest, but no charges or arrests were made as the investigation continued Wednesday, according to Benson Police Chief Greg Percy.

“Investigators are still actively following up on information gathered at the scene,” Percy said.
