Biker Arrested After US 70 Chase

CLAYTON – A motorcycle driver was arrested Thursday afternoon following a brief high speed chase along Highway 70 in Johnston County.  It began on the US 70 near Clayton when a SAFE Team deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle for speeding 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.  The biker refused to pull over and quickly reached speeds of 115 mph. 

Near the intersection of Highway 70 and Wilson’s Mills Road, a pursuing deputy collided with a passenger car. No injuries were reported. 

A short distance away, the motorcycle ran out of gas and the driver was apprehended. During a search of his backpack, narcotics were located.

Taniel Julian Smith, 26, of Poole Road, Raleigh was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, possession with intent to manufacture sell or deliver cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.
