CLAYTON – The driver of a box truck was seriously injured after striking the rear of a dump truck. The accident was reported around 10:15am Monday on Highway 42 just east of Buffalo Road.
According to a witness, the empty dump truck was on Highway 42 slowing to turn into a construction area when the Johnstone Supply box truck slammed into the rear of the dump truck. The box truck became attached to the dump truck and was dragged off the roadway before stopping.
The Johnstone Supply driver was severely pinned in the cab. Thanksgiving and Archer Lodge firefighters along with Johnston County EMS worked to extricate the driver before he was taken to an awaiting Duke Life Flight helicopter and flown to the hospital.
The accident shut down Highway 42 until 11:30am.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
