Car Chase Ends At Suspect’s Apartment

SMITHFIELD – A 24 year-old Smithfield man was taken into custody outside his home following a car chase.  Smithfield Police said they stopped a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer on July 12th at 6:57am on W. Market Street at Sixth Street. 

As the officer approached the SUV, a red traffic light at the intersection turned green and the driver sped away.  Police attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle but the driver refused to pull over until he reached his apartment in the Glen Lakes Apartment complex on Highway 210. 

Leonardo Lakeem Legette, 24, of Highway 210, Smithfield was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, resisting a public officer, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Police said they seized 4.9 grams of suspected marijuana from Legette.

The SUV he was operating was seized under the NC Run and You’re Done law.   

Legette was confined in the Johnston County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bail. No injuries were reported.
