Car Strikes Town Of Smithfield Trash Truck

A town-owned trash truck was involved in a collision Monday afternoon.  The accident happened at 1:10pm on Highway 301 South between Tyler Drive and Country Club Road in Smithfield.

According to a Smithfield Police accident report, a 2018 International trash truck owned by the Town of Smithfield was in the northbound lane of Highway 301 preparing to turn into a driveway when it was struck from behind by a 2013 Honda passenger car.

The driver of the truck, Christopher Calvin Ellis of Four Oaks, and the driver of the car, Meghan Alexis Barham of Greenville, NC, were checked out at the scene by Johnston County EMS paramedics but declined transport to the hospital.

Police estimated Barham was traveling at 45mph when she collided with the rear of the trash truck, which had slowed to 10mph to turn.  According to the collision report, Barham told police she did not see the truck turning until it was too late.

Damage to the Honda was placed at $10,000. Damage to the trash truck was estimated at $3,500.

Officer M.A. Jernigan cited Barham for failure to reduce speed.
