Caretaker, Boyfriend Stole From Elderly Woman, JCSO Says

ANGIER – A caretaker and her boyfriend are accused of stealing money from a western Johnston County woman.

According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office,  Heather Brooke Hatcher, 34, of Marie Court, Willow Spring was hired by the family of a 78 year-old woman to sit with her and assist with her grocery shopping.  When the victim was no longer able to go to the grocery store, Hatcher went to the store and purchased items using her debit card.

After being entrusted with the debit card,  Hatcher and her boyfriend, Christopher Lee Elliott, 34, of Smith Road, Smithfield reportedly used the card at numerous ATM’s to obtain cash, and at Food Lion stores to obtain cash while purchasing groceries for the victim.

Altogether, Hatcher and Elliott are accused of stealing $2,760.91 from the elderly victim between Aug. 29th and Sept. 25th. A relative of the elderly woman noticed the suspicious transactions and notified authorities.

Hatcher was arrested Oct. 9th and charged with exploitation of the disabled/elderly, obtaining property by false pretense and 15 counts of felony conspiracy.

Elliott was also arrested on Oct. 9th and charged with one count of felony conspiracy and 15 counts of obtaining property by false pretense.  The two suspects were confined in the Johnston County Jail on an $80,000 secured bond each.
