Catalytic Converter Thieves Caught In The Act, Report Says

CLAYTON – A Clayton homeowner reportedly caught two men stealing a catalytic converter from a car. The suspects fled before deputies arrived but were arrested a short time later.

On September 23rd, deputies received a call reporting two suspects were stealing a catalytic converter from a car on Coachman Court in the Heather Downs subdivision off Jack Road.

Before officers arrived, the two men fled in their vehicle. A witness gave deputies a description of the getaway vehicle. It was located a short time later and the suspects were apprehended during a traffic stop. Authorities said the stolen catalytic converter was not in the vehicle pulled over but was recovered at another location.

Christen Lamar Hatley, 34, of Coachman Court, Clayton and Cedrick Maurice Gerald, 32, of Blackman Street, Benson were charged with felony larceny of motor vehicle parts, felony conspiracy, and misdemeanor injury to property.

Hatley and Gerald were confined in the Johnston County Jail on $25,000 bonds.


  1. Wouldn’t it be easier to just set up camp at the scrap yards that are buying stolen goods. If regular folks buy stolen property they can be charged…… Asking for a friend.
