Celebrate Independent Retailer Month In Smithfield

Shop Small. Support Local. Strengthen Community.

SMITHFIELD – This July, the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) is proud to celebrate Independent Retailer Month, a nationwide campaign dedicated to showcasing the positive impact of locally owned businesses on our economy, culture, and community.

From charming boutiques and shops to specialty stores and creative services, Downtown Smithfield is home to an incredible mix of independent retailers—each one bringing a unique touch to our downtown.

Why shop small?
Because it matters.

  • For every dollar spent at a small business, an average of $0.67 stays in the local community.
  • Independent retailers return over 46% of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 13% from national chains.
  • Local businesses donate 250% more to community causes than large corporations.
  • Small businesses are a powerful job creator—adding 8 million jobs since 1990, while big businesses cut 4 million.

Consumers agree:

  • 94% say shopping small makes them feel good
  • 87% still prefer to shop in physical stores
  • 90% are more likely to buy when helped by a knowledgeable salesperson

Throughout July, the DSDC will be spotlighting downtown retailers on social media, sharing their stories, celebrating their successes, and inviting you to stop in and shop.
