Church Bishop Charged With Sexually Assaulting Child

A local church bishop has been arrested on more than a dozen charges for the alleged sexual abuse of a small child.

Johnston County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said authorities received a report about the alleged abuse on August 8th and immediately launched an investigation.

Bishop Corrie Vachan Lanier, 38, of Smithfield was arrested Monday and charged with 13 felony offenses including 5 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and 4 counts of statutory rape.  Authorities did not release the age of the female victim.

Bishop Lanier is not currently affiliated with a specific church but according to a social media search has conducted revival services at churches in Johnston and Wake counties.

Lanier was given a $500,000 bond on the charges.
