Clayton Man Arrested For Attempted Murder

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has announced an arrest in a January shooting incident on Highway 42 West. Hector Luis Ortiz Jr. of Georgetowne Drive, Clayton was arrested Feb. 20th and charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and discharging a weapon into occupied property.

Around 5:00am January 19th, a 30 year-old Garner man said he was leaving his girlfriend’s home in the Cleveland community. As he was leaving her address, the victim said he saw Ortiz, her ex-boyfriend, driving by. Ortiz allegedly began following the man, and near the intersection of Highway 42 West and Nicklaus Drive reportedly opened fire on the victim’s pickup. The pickup was struck numerous times.

While attempting to avoid the gunfire the victim crashed the truck and it became disabled. The suspect then sped away.

Miraculously, the victim escaped without any injury from the gunfire or the vehicle accident.

Ortiz was confined in the Johnston County Jail on a half million dollar secured bond.
