Clayton Police Charge Man With Defrauding Walmart

A 55-year-old Mecklenburg County man was arrested on Sunday afternoon after police say he brought items from the Clayton Walmart that he hadn’t purchased yet and attempted to “return” them in exchange for a gift card.

Walmart personnel allegedly told Clayton Police they spotted the man taking two pairs of men’s basketball shorts from store shelves, bring them immediately to customer service instead of checking them out at a register, and exchanging them for a $21.26 Walmart gift card. Store personnel said the rest of his cart was full of other unpaid merchandise including candy and household items which totaled $108.18.

Surveillance camera footage reportedly showed the man entering Walmart with a shopping cart full of empty plastic bags.

Jospeh Patrick Fengya of Matthews, NC was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and misdemeanor larceny.

Clayton Police transported him to the Johnston County Jail, where he was given a $25,000 secured bond.
