The Town of Clayton has been ranked first in North Carolina for improving affordability for renters. Clayton can now add improving affordability to its list of accomplishments.
According to Rent.com, rent is decreasing all over the Tarheel state. From the Mountains, Piedmont or Coastal Plain, you may still pay a pretty penny for a place to rent, depending on what you’re looking for, but it will be less than what you would have paid this time last year.
Known for its easy access to the Triangle, healthcare facilities, educational establishments, and an easy drive to the mountains or coast, Clayton ranked number one on the 2021 list for Rent.com.
“Clayton’s geographic location has always been a plus for our town,” said Mayor Jody McLeod. “Just a short drive to get on I-40 or I-95 giving quick access to the beach or the mountains. Clayton is definitely the premier place for active families with lots to do and affordable quality living. It says a lot to be acknowledged by this and we are truly appreciative for support to market the Town of Clayton And Johnston County.”

In Clayton, the average one bedroom rental price is $1,078. That is down 9.24 percent from a year ago.
Rent.com stated, “Only a 15-minute drive from Raleigh is the comparatively small town of Clayton, and the city’s growth is largely due to the continued success of the Research Triangle area. Clayton is particularly known for job opportunities galore since manufacturing facilities and pharmaceutical companies have set up shop there. It also doesn’t hurt that the town is in spitting distance of major highways like I-40 and U.S. 70!
It’s not all work in Clayton, however. The downtown area features a superb portfolio of dining options, breweries, boutiques and even an outdoor summer concert series. It’s the ideal time to move to this charming town, as it tops our list of North Carolina cities where rent is decreasing the most, with a decrease of more than 9 percent, which equates to $90 per month!”
In another ranking by Rent.com, Clayton ranked 25th across the state as having the cheapest rent of any large city. Carrboro ranked 12th, Fayetteville 5th, and Asheboro 1st. Asheboro’s average rent for a one bedroom apartment is $484 down 1.42 percent from a year ago.
Rent prices are based on a rolling weighted average from Apartment Guide and Rent.com’s multifamily rental property inventory. Cities were excluded if they did not have an average of at least 20 units in available rental inventory.
