Convenience Store Employees Accused Of Stealing Money

CLAYTON – Two employees at a Clayton convenience store were arrested on felony charges after they allegedly stole money from the business.  Clayton Police said the thefts happened at the Speedway Convenient Mart at 8060 US Highway 70 Business West.

On January 20th, police responded to Speedway after a store manager reported an audit found that two employees had allegedly made fraudulent transactions, voided the sales, then kept the money.

Jared Ambrosini, 37, of Country Club Lane, Zebulon and Jeffrey Jerome Howell Jr., 28, of Cleveland Road, Smithfield were reportedly found to have been embezzling money since early December 2021.

The transactions were conducted on several different occasions and the exact number of fraudulent transactions and the amount of money stolen is still being reviewed by Clayton Police investigators in conjunction with the store management.  At last report, Ambrosini had been reportedly linked to the theft of $785.87.  Howell had been linked to the larceny of $161.74 in cash.

Both men were arrested January 20th at Speedway and charged with one count each of felony larceny by employee.  They were transported to the Johnston County Jail without incident. They both received $20,000 secured bonds.

Clayton Police Major Jon Gerrell said the case is still under investigation to determine if any further fraudulent transactions occurred.
