Counterfeit $100 Bills Passed At Businesses

SMITHFIELD – Police are asking merchants to be on the lookout for counterfeit $100 bills after incidents at four local businesses.

Someone passed a bogus $100 bill October 7th at Walmart at 1299 N. Brightleaf Boulevard.  On October 9th, similar incidents were reported at Adam & Eve, Sketchers, and Smithfield Cinemas. 

At Sketchers, the suspect purchased socks for $10.66 and passed the counterfeit bill. At the Smithfield Cinemas theater, the suspect passed two counterfeit $100 bills to buy two movie tickets and a large popcorn.

Smithfield Police Captain R. Sheppard said some of the bills had the same serial number and the cases are probably connected. At last report no arrests had been made.   


  1. had a counterfeit 50 passed at arby’s in clayton. however the person got no change back and drove off with only food. Clayton police are investigating.
