I-95 In Smithfield Reopens Following Crash

UPDATE 9:30PM: Both southbound lanes of I-95 have reopened to traffic.

SMITHFIELD – An accident involving at least three vehicles has closed Interstate 95 in Smithfield. The accident was reported around 6:00pm this evening (Thursday) in the southbound lanes under the Highway 70 Bridge.

A utility truck and dump truck traveling southbound collided. The utility truck overturned on its side blocking both southbound lanes. A passenger car behind the two trucks was struck by debris.  The utility truck driver sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The NC Department of Transportation has responded to the scene to inspect damage to the roadway.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off I-95 at Highway 70 (Exit 95) until the two trucks can be towed from the scene.

The NC Highway Patrol, Smithfield Police Department, Smithfield Fire Department and Johnston County EMS are also on the scene.
