Crash Seriously Injures Moped Operator

Smithfield Police are investigating a crash that seriously injured a moped operator. The collision occur at 5:00pm Tuesday on Collier Street near LeMay Street.

Police said 63 year-old George Lee Wright of Blount Street, Smithfield was operating a 2019 moped southbound on Collier Street when he attempted to make a turn.  Police said he was traveling too fast to make the turn and wrecked. 

Witnesses told police Wright was hit by a car, however officers said physical evidence located at the scene and an examination of the vehicle in question indicated no other vehicles were involved.

According to an accident report, impairment on alcohol and other drugs was suspected, however, due to Wright’s medical condition no tests were administered.

Wright was transported by Johnston County EMS to Wake Medical Center.  Police described his injuries as serious but non-life threatening. 

The accident remains under investigation.
