A Benson man was arrested by a Johnston County SAFE Team deputy during a weekend traffic stop. Around 12:30am Saturday, the deputy stopped a car in the 5300 block of Highway 42 West near I-40 in Cleveland for a violation.
After approaching the car, the officer said he spotted an unrestrained child standing on the rear seat and a second child asleep in the rear floorboard.
The driver, Devin Lamar Brantley, 34, of Shadowwood Road was reportedly found to have suspected powder cocaine concealed inside a folded $1 bill. Deputies said the white substance field tested positive for cocaine.
Brantley was arrested for felony possession of cocaine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and a child restraint violation.
The two children, whose ages nor relationship with Brantley were disclosed, were turned over to Brantley’s wife who was called to the scene. Brantley was confined in the Johnston County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 bond.
