Deputies Link Suspect To Theft Of Construction Equipment

Johnston County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of construction equipment on Crape Myrtle Drive outside of Benson.

A representative with Hopco Construction of Raleigh reported a skid steer bucket valued at $1,000 and backhoe bucket valued at $1,200 were stolen from a worksite between Dec. 23 and 28th.

Kevin Mark Hackney Jr., 25, of Lazy Branch Drive, Benson was arrested Dec. 31st after he allegedly sold one of the stolen buckets on Facebook Marketplace.  Authorities said the buyer did not realize the bucket had been stolen.  It was later recovered but the second bucket has not been located.

Hackney was held on a $30,000 secured bond at the Johnston County Jail charged with felony larceny from a construction site and felony obtaining property by false pretenses.
