Deputy Checks On Adult Riding Child’s Bicycle On Dark Roadway And Solves Crime

An adult riding a child’s bicycle in the roadway at night got the attention of a Johnston County deputy sheriff on routine patrol.

Around 11:00pm Friday, a deputy  was traveling in the 10000 block of Highway 96 North of Selma near Price Road when he spotted a man peddling down the dark roadway.  The officer stopped to make sure the man was okay.

The pedal cyclist, 42 year-old Randy Harold Grice of the 100 block of Beulahtown Road, Kenly, was unable to tell the deputy where he had been or who owned the bicycle. The officer noticed a bulge under Grice’s shirt.  The officer determined the bulge was several pieces of US Mail addressed to a resident on Highway 231 in the Corinth Holders community.

Deputies made contact with the recipient of the mail, who informed officers the letters had been stolen out of her mailbox a day earlier. The stolen mail was returned to the victim.

Grice was charged with misdemeanor larceny and jailed under a $10,000 bond.  The child’s bicycle was impounded while authorities look for the owner.
