A Johnston County deputy sheriff was injured while arresting a Benson man. It happened around 7:30am Tuesday at a home in the 4400 block of Highway 50 South of Benson.
Deputies had gone to an address to serve a domestic violence protection order on Leon Goodwin Jr. The court order required Goodwin to leave the address where he had been staying. After being served with the order authorities said the 34 year-old refused repeated requests leave. When Sgt. C. Arnold attempted to place Goodwin under arrest, a physical altercation ensued and the officer was struck in the head, and his neck was also scratched.
Deputies had to pepper spray Goodwin before he could be detained. Two officers had their law enforcement uniforms damaged during the altercation.
Goodwin was transported to the Johnston County Jail and charged with felony assault causing physical injury on a law enforcement officer, injury to property, resisting a public officer, and violation of a domestic violence protection order (DVPO). Goodwin was given no bond on the DVPO charge. He was given $20,000 bond on the additional charges.
According to a report, Sgt. Arnold sustained minor injuries.
