Diamond Rings Shoplifted From Jewelry Store

SMITHFIELD – Detectives are investigating a shoplifting incident at a local jewelry store.  It was reported September 1st at Zale’s Jewelers on Outlet Center Drive.   Store personnel were conducting inventory and discovered two diamond rings valued at $5,600 and $2,500 were missing.

Staff began reviewing video surveillance footage and discovered a shopper had stolen the rings from a display counter August 24th while the clerk was distracted.

Police have not said if the theft may be linked to an August 10th incident at the same store when a $19,380 necklace was stolen during a snatch and grab robbery.  There were as many as three assailants involved in that incident.

Smithfield Police are investigating both crimes.
