A Clayton man was arrested by Johnston County deputies following a short chase Tuesday morning. Deputies had gone to the residence of 41 year-old Steven Ray Ofstad on Barber Mill Road to conduct a welfare check. As a deputy was knocking on the front door, Ofstad reportedly exited out the rear door and fled in a red pickup truck.
The deputy radioed ahead to another officer who spotted the truck on Barber Mill Road at Cleveland Road. The officer attempted to pull over the truck but Ofstad reportedly failed to yield and continued onto Cleveland Road and then turned onto Monroe Road. A short distance down Monroe Road, officers said Ofstad pulled over and stopped.
Ofstad was charged with failure to heed a light or siren and driving without a license. He was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
