Driver Charged With Murder In Death Of Bicyclist

GOLDSBORO – A murder charge has been filed in the hit and run death of a bicyclist. On June 1st around 2:15pm, James Earl Wiggins, 54, of Goldsboro was riding his bicycle on Cadel Lane near Goldsboro when he was reportedly struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene.

Wiggins was rushed to Wayne UNC Health and later transferred to Vidant Medical Center for treatment of life threatening injuries. On June 2nd, Wiggins died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Following an investigation, Laban Charles Dunton, 60, of Lou Alma Drive, Goldsboro was charged with murder.

Detectives allege Dunton intentionally struck the bicyclist with his vehicle before fleeing from the scene.

Dunton, at last report, remains in the Wayne County Detention Center without bond.
