Driver Hits Trooper’s Car During Chase

A teenager driver is facing numerous charges after he sped through a Highway Patrol license checkpoint Thursday night near Smithfield then led officers on a chase.

Around 9:15pm, troopers were conducting a checkpoint on Galilee Road when a black Ford Taurus failed to stop and sped through the check point.  Troopers began pursuing the car down Galilee Road then onto Highway 210 towards Smithfield.

Officers were attempting to conduct a rolling roadblock to end the chase but the fleeing driver, identified as 17 year-old Brandon Mark Canterbury of Wendell slammed on the brakes and steered into the side of a patrol car.  The collision brought the chase to an end.

Canterbury and two other teenagers in the car were not injured but were still checked out by an EMS crew that responded to the scene.  No officers were injured.

The two passengers in Canterbury’s car were turned over to their parents. Canterbury was transported to the Johnston County Jail where he faces a long list of charges including felony fleeing to elude arrest.
