Driver Who Fled From Benson-Area Checkpoint Arrested, JCSO Says

A motorist who reportedly did a u-turn to avoid a license checkpoint then led officers on a brief chase is facing several charges.

Around 1:40PM Wednesday, SAFE Team deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a checkpoint on Dragstrip Road at McLamb Road outside of Benson.  Officers said a 1998 Ford Explorer stopped short of the checking station, did a u-turn, and began speeding away in the opposite direction.  Deputies caught up with the SUV and attempted to pull over the driver.  Instead of stopping, the suspect reportedly accelerated to speeds of 85 miles per hour.  A short time later the driver eventually pulled over.

Lee Earl McArthur Jr., 49, of the 4200 block of Bryant Pond Road, Dunn was arrested and charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving on a revoked license, reckless driving, and speeding.  His SUV was also seized.  Arthur was transported to the Johnston County Jail and held under a $30,000 secured bond.
