A Selma man is facing drunk driving and hit and run charges following an accident Monday night on North Fifth Street in Smithfield.
Police said a local resident had been riding his bicycle on North Fifth Street and left the bike leaning on the curb in front of his home, while he was just a few feet away gathering some belongings in his front yard.
That’s when police said Juan Ramirez, 51, of Campground Road, Selma ran over the parked bicycle with his 2004 Chevy SUV and never stopped. Ramirez was located minutes later operating the SUV on Buffalo Road near Smithfield Middle School and stopped.
Smithfield Police said Ramirez registered 0.11 on the Breathalyzer. He was charged with driving while impaired and hit and run causing property damage. He was released on a $1,000 bond pending a March 5th court appearance .
No injuries were reported.
