DWI Charge Filed In Accident

A 43 year-old man was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, and failure to maintain lane control after wrecking his pickup.  Smithfield Police responded to the 12:11am accident on Monday, August 2nd on Highway 70 (W. Market Street) at M. Durwood Stephenson Highway.

Police said Filogonia Mendoza Acevedo of Smithfield was traveling eastbound on Highway 70. He claimed the front tire on his 2018 Chevy truck was making a funny noise and he lost control.  The truck struck four trees in the median, traveled 314 feet through a ditch, then lost his front tire which traveled an additional 89 feet.   Police estimated Acevedo was traveling at 55 mph in a 45 mph zone when the crash occurred.

No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.

Acevedeo registered 0.20 on the Breathalyzer, more than two times higher than the legal limit of 0.08, police said.      

Damage to the highway median trees, owned by the Town of Smithfield, was estimated at $1,000. The truck sustained approximately $6,000 in damage, according to an accident report.
