A 28 year-old man is facing drunken driving charges after police tried to pull him over for speeding. It happened at 1:12AM today (Friday). A Smithfield police officer was on routine patrol using radar on N. Brightleaf Boulevard. The officer clocked a 2002 Honda traveling southbound at 72 mph in a 35 mph zone.
The policeman attempted to stop the vehicle but it failed to pull over until reaching the driveway of a home in the 400 block of N. Eleventh Street. The driver, Rocael Morales Ortiz, of the same address, was taken into custody on charges of driving while impaired, failure to stop for a blue light, speeding and driving without a license.
Police said Ortiz registered 0.17 on the Breathalyzer, more than double the legal limit of 0.08. Ortiz was released on a $3,500 bond pending a Nov. 24th court appearance.
