A 32 year-old man was arrested for driving while impaired after he crashed his SUV into a fence. The suspect reportedly told police the accident was caused by someone in another vehicle shooting at him.
Smithfield Police said Charles Edward Riffle III of Selma was traveling south on Wal-Pat Road around 11:00PM Wednesday when he failed to negotiate a curve. Riffle ran off the roadway and struck a fence at an adjacent salvage yard business. Police estimated the speed of his vehicle at 45mph at the time of impact.
Riffle registered 0.11 on the Breathalyzer, above the legal limit of 0.08. He was released on a $1,000 bond pending a Jan. 25, 2020 court appearance.
Police said his 2011 GMC Acadia sustained $5,000 in damages. The vehicle was impounded. Damage to the fence was placed at $1,000.
There was no evidence to substantiate his alleged claims that he was being shot at when the single vehicle accident occurred.
