Father Left Child Unattended In Locked Car, Police Said

SMITHFIELD – A father who reportedly left his young child inside a car while he went inside a business has been cited for misdemeanor child abuse. Smithfield Police said the incident occurred May 20th around 12:35pm in the parking lot of Food Lion at 861 W. Market Street.

Police allege Montaray Martese Self, age 36, of S. Brightleaf Boulevard, Smithfield left his child in the car with the doors locked and the engine turned off while he went inside Food Lion. The child was in the vehicle for approximately 15-20 minutes and was visibly upset when located, police reported.

The child was removed from the vehicle and evaluated at the scene by EMS. The reported temperature were in the mid-80’s at the time of the incident.

Martese was cited for child abuse and released at the scene pending a June 23, 2022 appearance in Johnston County District Court.

The age of the child was not released.
