A Benson man was arrested after a rifle was reportedly found inside his car during a traffic stop. Authorities said the driver, Isrrael Vazquez of the 5200 block of Highway 50 North, was a convicted felon and could not legally possess a firearm.
A SAFE team deputy with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office stopped a car Wednesday at 2:46pm that Vazquez was operating on Zack’s Mill Road near Penny Road. The officer said he stopped the car for a registration and equipment violation. The rifle was allegedly found in the trunk of the vehicle.
Vazquez was charged with felonious possession of a firearm by a felon. The 22 caliber rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition was seized.
Bail was set at $25,000.
