A former contestant on American Idol was arrested in Johnston County on Sunday. Authorities said the singer had a wide range of emotions while in custody, singing to police then cursing at the same officers moments later.
Around 2:00am, Selma Police stopped a vehicle that had just left the parking lot of the Rumba Club on US 301 South, failing to signal then striking a curb.
Police said the operator of the 2013 Chevy Malibu turned onto US 70 weaving in the travel lanes before coming to a complete stop near Interstate 95.
The driver, 28 year-old Lamar Quiandre Royal of Goldsboro, reportedly told police he was a former contestant on American Idol.
A Selma police officer said he detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the Malibu. Royal allegedly denied consuming alcohol saying he had been at his grandmother’s home. He also indicated he was texting and playing with the radio on the car.
When police asked Royal to exit his car, he reportedly told the officer, “Don’t you put your hands on me. If you put your hands on me we will march.”
“I am Lamar Royal. I was on Season 10 of American Idol. I have money. You don’t mess with me,” he allegedly told the officer after getting out of his car.
After he allegedly failed a field sobriety test, police said Royal stated, “I’m ready to go to jail now. Take me to jail now…. Do you know who I am. I am a millionaire. You mean nothing to me. I was on American Idol.”
After being handcuffed and placed in a patrol cruiser, Royal reportedly started to cry and then screamed, “They are so good to me. They have been so good to me. Oh my God, they have been so good to me.”
He then reportedly began singing a song by the artist Seal entitled Kiss from a Rose to the officers.
The officer said he asked Royal to calm down, to which he replied, “I was on American Idol.”
While being given the Breathalyzer test at the Selma police station, Royal reportedly told a second officer, “I need you to contact TMZ. I am famous. I need my paparazzi. Call TMZ please. Wait until my fans find out I have been arrested for the first time. Oh my God… you should be proud you arrested me. Do you know who I am?”
“Oh my God, please call Channel 11. They need to know I’m down here. The paparazzi is outside. They will be waiting.”
Royal registered 0.18 on the Breathalyzer, more than double the legal limit of 0.08 in NC.
Police said Royal began screaming and asked an officer to look up his Season 10 video online. Police said after looking up his video he became calm. He then stated, “See I told you I was on there.”
Royal was transported to the Johnston County Jail. After appearing before a magistrate he reportedly started screaming, “F**k you. You are an a**hole. I drive buses for the mother f**cking Wayne County Public Schools. So f**k you. You don’t know who the f**k you are dealing with. I need these (handcuffs) off of me.”
Royal was charged with driving while impaired and given a $25,000 bond on the offense.
According to his arrest report, Royal is a bus driver for Wayne County Public Schools in Goldsboro. Officials with Wayne County Schools told WTSB News late-Monday, Royal has been a substitute bus driver since August 2014. He was placed on Administrative Leave effective today.
